A thread for PMR-30 reliability mods, fixes, mods. No war stories, many threads for that.

I got a PMR-30 a few weeks ago and out of the box it did not feed and jammed, about 40% failures.
The slide was very difficult to pull back and the slide release took two thumbs and lots of force to release.

I took it home and looked at it, the fit and finish is a big issue. Contamination in the paint, too much internal painted, burrs.

- I cleaned out the slide channels with a fine angled file, upper and lower, not much, just enough to clean out the channel and get the slide to move properly.

- Filed the catching corner of the release, this video shows it. https://youtu.be/RmHb45vH8yA?t=130
I used a steel diamond nail file and took several passes, reassembling each bit and tried it until I had it where I liked, now it is very nice, a bit of pressure to retain and releases like a Glock.

- Pulled the firing pin and found a puddle of nasty oil in the channel, cleaned that well. Took the firing pin and used 600 grit Emory cloth and polished the flats and cleaned the edges.

- Reassembled with NO oil, this is a blowback, so the firing pin area is quickly contaminated by blowback, oil attracts dirt, so no oil. (Oil like a Glock, just the slide rail areas and minimal)

- I ordered the Mcarbo "Enhanced magazine release" to remove that .040" inch drop of magazine at chamber/pick area. If you observe the slide in action, it only catches about 25% of the next round, with the Mcarbo mag catch it goes to about 33%. https://www.mcarbo.com/kel-tec-pmr-30-enhanced-magazine-release.aspx

- Also order a good loader, I got the loader by American Speedloader, or the lula pmr-30 speed loader is highly regarded as well. Hand loading over 20 is hard and causes damage to shell casing very easily, use a good loader

Magula loader: https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1021153869?pid=896872

It's working really good now, pretty much at zero percent failures. I am adding the stainless feed ramp and will polish it, I think the poly factory ramp will no doubt get a groove in time due its very nature of the material, so that is for prevention more than current resolution of feed issues, but it will help with different types of ammo.

This all took a few hours, but it is as reliable as any auto I have and fun to shoot, i love to fireball out of the muzzle!

Great post! Thanx for the tips.

Got mine back from the mother ship and ran 30 rnds. perfectly.

If problems develop I will follow you suggestions,
What ammo are you using?

Thank you,
Steve

A girl friend of my wife's was given a PMR 30 as part of her father's estate by her brother.
She brought it over to test at my private range and before I let her handle it I wanted to check it out.
I loaded the two mags with a couple brands of 40gr. ammo that she provided and it proceeded to misfeed right from the beginning. Every other round.
I watched a variety of videos and read a variety of blog posts about possibly reasons and cure's.
I have tried cleaning and lubricant to no avail.
Tried holding the magazine up tight to overcome the gap issue, still made no difference.
Massaged the hump in the feed ramp, also no improvement.
It appears to only misfeed on rounds coming up from the left side of the magazine, those coming from right side feed fine. They seem to hang up on the left side extractor.
If I point the gun down, pull back slightly on the slide and allow the round to straighten up then it will drop in when I release the slide.
MCarbo has a lot of aftermarket parts available but I'm not sure that these would necessarily fix the issue.
Not sure what to advise her to do. The improved mag catch and feed ramp are possibly worthy improvements and I can easier install them but that's $80 plus shipping and they may not correct the problem.
I've had problems with mags in guns I own, metal mags, that I've been able to tweak the ears to alter the bullet attitude and make them feed correctly but these thick lipped plastic mags I am loathe to attempt fiddling with.
I appreciate knowledgeable feedback.
Thanks

Update, after first trying everything I've seen advised in various forums and YouTube videos to no avail I left the decision to her as to whether to return it to her brother or spend $80 on the two most popular aftermarket accessories intended to improve these issues.
She opted to spend the money, I ordered, parts arrived and I installed them, improved magazine retainer and CNC machines feedramp.
Result...... Now it doesn't feed from either side of the magazine, jams with every cycle.
Attached photos of rounds jammed in slide and of the two brands of ammo tried.
Ammo brand made no difference. Still appears to hang up on the extractors.
