\"Ears\"

He cut the "ears" off. Also see Midi's Saga 2 posts under P3AT forum above. Now it looks a lot like mine. Waiting for a range report from Flyer on how it does.

Flyer, have you told Kel Tec what we've done? Do they care?

Thanks for explaining, oldgranpa, been away awhile...
The new ramp does just fine! No problems at all, and needless to say, to trace of a smiley!!!
No, I haven't been in touch with KT, but I DO know that Marty, their head 'Smith, did the ramp mod to HIS P-3AT... don't know whether they'll incorporate it into the factory pistols or not...

Works better with no \"ears\"

OK, Flyer,
same results I had, no ears and no malfunctions, plus no more smileys (at least with clean pistol). We need to hear if Midi had same results after he cut the ears off.

I guess KT is going to ignore all this. Big financial problem if they had to recall barrels for mod. Hope they don't get forced to do something by someone having a KB from a round with big setback and high pressure.

Lot's of people at Glock Talk reporting good results with the P3AT but none of them seem aware of the smiley problem. I'm not going there and start a flame war by telling them. Is ignorance bliss?

Or are we over-reacting to all this? I'm not a good enough gunsmith to decide but my calculations on the barrel strength say it has a very low safety factor for standard ammo. Seems eventually somethings got to give.

og.........whose AT has no smileys!!

The reason I asked is that Flyer's barrel looks like my new barrels with a little different ramp angle. Are you sure that Kel-tec isn't doing your mod already? What is the lug width of your "earless" barrel compared to the pictures of the new barrels I posted a while back.
Harley,
It does look like KT is shipping the newest barrels with the mod already done.
Here's my barrel after the first mod:

This still left the "ears" oldgrapa's talking about, and you can see how much farther forward the ramp extended than both the new factory ramp, and my new ramp mod... (this is from pistol #14X).
Marty at KT did my mod as soon as I posted it at Ktog, so I wouldn't be surprised if KT did make the change... wouldn't be the first time.

If Kel-Tec is now doing the mod on new barrels that is another reason I anxiously await the hard crome replacement for the P3AT.
Hard Chrome Exchange

The latest rumor from Kel-Tec (yesterday) is that "usually the exchange becomes available about a year after the gun is released, and since this one came out in May...?"
Looks like a ramp job for me.
I realize that the person I talked to may not have the real real scoop but that was the answer I got. Kim
Here's the current, untested state of my ramp mod. It seems set back deep enough to me.

Feed Ramp?

Can someone tell me the thickness of the barrel feed ramp lug at the edge and also the center of a new barrel that has not yet had the feed ramp worked?

I believe I have mine now mostly smiley free but I'm curious about how much that I took off. I should have measured mine before I started working on it. At the time I thought about it but just didn't do it, now I wish I would of..

Now that mine is cut it is: .135" at the edge (ears) and .115" at the center.

It looks about like Flyers, I know that I didn't cut as much as Oldgranpa but I might have to.

How is yours working Oldgrandpa??

I bought another P-3AT Serial # HE5XX Hard Chrome so I now know the answer to my question above.

I've taken a total of .055" from the edge (ears) and .075" from the center of the feed ramp lug on my original 3AT, I'm still getting a slight smiley. Looking at the pictures, my ramp appears to be similar to Flyers (I'm guessing)

I guess I'll keep taking from the ramp until the smileys go away or it will no longer feed rounds, which ever comes first. W.A.
Forgive the rookie, but my new HCLXX feed ramp already looks like your modified one. Is it correct to assume that KT has incorporated this into the new pistols? I did have a slight burr on one edge of the feed ramp, but that came right off with a diamond stone and I polished the whole works as best I could with 1000 grit (that takes a while!).

Thanks.
Yes. It does appear that KT has incorporated the Ramp Mod into the Second Generation AT.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery...

Thanks for not settling for just "good", and working so hard to perfect this little sidekick.
Hello all. As you can see, I am new to this forum and just today happened across this topic. I'm also new to the Kel-Tec scene as the only Kel-Tec I own is a recently purchased P-32.

After reading thru this topic, am I to believe that I need to take my Dremel tool and hack off the feed ramp of my barrel to assure it feeds properly? I assume the "smileys" are caused by failures to feed.

I've only had one day at the range with my P-32 and it functioned well. I must say that my confidence will be shaken if I find out I need to make mods to it before it's trustworthy. I guess I could still be packin' my 26...

You assume wrong. Smilies are caused by the barrel blowing back and the feed ramp smacking into the nose of the round in the mag. When the mag is empty, it starts beating the bejesus out of your follower... and may break the rear corners of the mag.
Since you're shooting a P-32, you're not too likely to be affected by smileys - they DO happen, but for some reason don't affect performance or anything else badly enough to cause problems. 8)

Thanks for setting me straight, guys. This forum is absolutely awesome.

WHERE you have the calipers on the feed/lug ramp is exactly where two of my barrel lugs broke off in my 2g P32 and I did not do any modifications at all, All factory . it is stillat kt yet after 5 weeks, 5th time in for that P32 also. not to sure I would grind any off that feed ramp if not needed (no smileys etc). just my opinion, from someone wo misses his p32 alot...
