G21Portelandore,
Welcome aboard!
Yep, you saw a P-11, if it was a 9mm. The P-32 and P-3AT are even smaller and cuter, but they're not nines!
The guide rod does ride up that far on the pistol; it's a design trait.
You'll find that the P-11 is an exceptionally reliable pistol, and has the added benefit of being the only pistol of it's size that holds a full 10 + rounds. With a Smith mag, which are fully compatible with the P-11, it can be turned into a 13 shooter.
A wide range of accessories are available, including night sights. It would be a first rate backup for Leo use, and quite a few of my friends carry them in that role (as well as their primary carry while off-duty)!
Give one a try, you'll like it!
