They have radically different appearances. If the barrel comes to a triangular sort of peak in the ejection port, it's a 1st gen. If it's flat, it's a 2nd gen. There are several other visible differences but this seems the easiest to describe.
I'm looking to purchase one of these sidearms, but I'm wondering how I'll know it's a newer Gen2 model. Is there a certain cut off point in the serial #s?
Also, does the parkerized finish rust? I like the dark, dull color, but I don't want to worry with surface rust.
Thanks.

Thanks Midiman.
Can anyone tell me about the parkerized finish rusting?
Yep, Parkerizing will rust - just far less than bluing. 8)

Look around here. Wilson has side by side pics of the 1st and 2nd gen P3AT's posted somewhere. The differences are obvious once you see them.

Thanks fellas. I did a little research thru in some of my materials text books, and it looks like the phosphate (parkerized) coating is slightly corrosion and oxidation resistant, but it's real beauty is that it will absorb a little oil. The oil in turn keeps everything from rusting.
Another question: This fluff and buff that I hear so much about, are there instructions for this or is it just a general deburr, stone, and polish of everything?
Thanks.

Thanks fellas.
I think I may just purchase the blued version, do the F&B and the Rampectomy, and then send the slide to be nickel plated. Where's the best place to buy spare mags?
