KSG 12ga serial numbers....... How to determine manufacturing date and generation ?

    Hello Kel-Tec Forum Members,

I am interested in a keltec 12ga at a local gun shop. Have researched online reviews that have mixed opinions on this unique looking shotgun. Want to gather more info including when made in hopes of making the right decision if a good buy.

    Thanks,
    james7

You can't tell the date of manufacture of a Kel Tec by the serial number. All you can tell is the number of the unit made...in order. Kel Tec is getting pretty close to making the 50,000 KSG...so any number above say 20-25,000 will be a 2nd gen.

There's a formula for figuring out the number...I posted it below it or YOU post the number and I can translate it.

Thanks Haugrdr, but I have to admit I cannot understand the last third of your example. My KSG is number X2975

Maybe if I could have seen R 2 3 4 5 plugged into the spots under X (Kel-Tec) it would have helped and I do understand about different base numbering systems, but..?

    But what goes where?

    .|_____________ * x 3,400 = ________________ (Convert A-Z with base 34 lookup)

    Should this be;

.|__R___________ * x 3,400 = ________________ (Convert A-Z with base 34 lookup) The way I read this if I plug in the value for "R" 25 then using * I am again suppose to multiply again by (x?) 3,400 or simple put 25 times, then times again. Or should the "*" not be there and it should read "R" 25 x 3,400?

    R * x 3,400 (R?) 25* x 3,400 E.g. 25 times what? (x) Times 3,400

    Anyway thanks

Yours is easy. R is just the prefix for ealy PF9's...ignore that. X is the prefix for KSG.

    2 x 3400 = 6800
    + 9 x 100 = 900
    + 7 x 10 = 70
    + 5 x 1 = 5
Total is 7775. Early model KSG...they're getting close to #50,000 right now.

I got my KSG today, and I would like to know the manufacture date. Im pretty sure its a third gen KSG, but having the serial number translated would help.

    Serial # XBU08

    Thanks.

    Serial number XBU08 = #40208.

Just for info, Kel Tec is up to around #50,500 KSG's as of last week.
