Breaking in my new PF9 @the range. After about 100 rounds started not locking back consistently. Four of last seven magazines failed to lock back on last shot. Could this be powder residue buildup from the practice ammo causing this? First 50 rounds PMC then halfway through a 100 rd box of WWB the problem began.
The lock back system is not very complicated. I would first ensure the gun is clean, especially in the area where the lock back lever is located. Also, dissasemble the mag and clean. Both should cycle smoothly with no binding. Make sure the tab of the lock down lever makes contact with the magazine follower. It should have tension on it from the mag spring. Next, inspect the magazine follower, ensure there is not excessive wear in the area area where the lock back lever touches the mag follower. Its a metal on plastic situation there and the plastic mag follower will wear. If all of that is good, make sure the mag follower is not biding on the inside of the mag. You may need to slightly round the edges of the mag follower. If you have a spare mag, you can quickly trouble shoot the gun or the mag, by simply swapping in a new mag. Hope this helps... good luck!
do what jax said. should fix the problem. sometimes it will not lock back, it is nothing to worry about.

One other thing I forgot, look at the lock back lug on the slide and the lever itself. There should not be a problem there with a new gun. I have however seen the slide develop a stress crack in that area.
