Question on Forward Assist ATF Policy - folding grip

How many of you have seen the folding, rail mount front grips being marketed with a photo of one mounted on a Glock? How is that legal but a forward assist on a PLR16 is not? Is there some work around with the fact that it is a quick detach mount or a folding handle? Anyone know for sure?
    Thanks.

I've seen it in a Cheaper Than Dirt catalog too, but it is very illegal, except if you give the ATF $200 or so and they let you create an 'any other weapon'. I've read somewhere they add a creation tax to that $200.

They make a spare mag holder that attaches to the rail on a glock, and it's in the same classification.

The picture you are refering to is for a forward grip that is made in Israel I believe.

It is not illegal to put a forward grip on a pistol in Israel, but in the USA it is. So take your PLR out of the US if you want to put a forward grip on it. Or you have to pay the $200 tax and convert it into an AOW or SBR to have a forward grip on it in the states.

Thanks for the input. I guess I was just wrong to expect any of it to make sense! Call me crazy, but I can't fully understand why I can have a foreward assist on an HK UMP with an 8 inch barrel but not on my PLR16.
By the way, the guy I have been buying Class II and III toys through tells me that he thinks it would just take the $5 AOW stamp + 9,000 day wait to "make it legal." Going the SBR route wouldn't be required; which is nice since I don't think there is a fixed or folding stock out there for the PLR16 anyway.

    Forward grip

Found this on the net. Very interesting.

ATF has made the decision that a handgun (but not a machine gun,
since a machine gun is not also an AOW) with more than one hand
grip at an angle tot eh bore is an AOW. This is based on the gun
    a) being concealable on the person, and b) not meeting the
definition of a "pistol" in the regulations promulgated under the
NFA, since they say a pistol has a single grip at an angle to the
bore. However, at least one federal magistrate has decided that if
the grip is added later, the gun is not "originally designed" to be
fired by holding in more than one grip, and thus putting a second
grip on a pistol does not make it an AOW. ATF does not regard the
decision as binding. The case is U.S. v. Davis, Crim No. 8:93-106
    (D.S.C. 1993) (Report of Magistrate, June 21, 1993). The
prosecution was dismissed at the request of the Government before
any review of that determination by the trial judge.

That is interesting. That tells me that ATF did not like the decision the judge was about to hand down in effect deleting one of ATF's rules on handguns so they had the prosecutor dismiss the case to keep the judge from hurting them. Looks like the Davis guy got off, lucky for him.

What if you mounted a short bipod on a PLR-16? Would that be verboten?

Well shoot, by that logic any thing you attach under the barrel, like a tactical light or laser, could be considered another grip. Heck, even the the plastic barrel shroud facilitates a second hand hold.
