AMMO warning

This is a heads up for everyone now that PLR's are starting to become more available to everyone.

When I first tried shooting my PLR a few months ago, I had trouble with FTfires and FTE. Most seemed to happen with Wolf steel case ammo (I had a few hundred rounds someone gave me). I contacted Kel-Tec and they said DO NOT use anything other than brass cased ammo in their guns.

I had seen a caution about this in the rifle section of K-T's web site, but there was no mention on if in the PLR area, so I thought I'd pass it along. Anyway, if you've been having problems with ammo not firing or ejecting properly, check to see what you're using and stay away from steel or aluminum cased bullets.

Mine shoots the steel cased Wolf just fine......

I wish mine would. Wolf is a lot cheaper than the replacements I've found. Wolf sells for $2.50 a box here and the next cheapest (Remington) is at least $5. Anyway, with the problems I had and the caution from K-T about the steel cased ammo, I thought I'd pass their reply along. If anyone has the same problem I did, the ammo may be causing it.

Wolf now has brass cased ammo in .223. That stock number is for 240 rounds of brass cased ammo 55 grain for $52.97.

Stopped by Academy sporting goods store Sunday afternoon and they received a shipment of Wolf brass .223 earlier this week. It's selling for $3.99 a box. Took home 10 boxes and intend to see how they shoot next week.

Doesn't the laquer on the Wolf casings lead to a build up of gunk in the chamber on many weapons?

yes, it is believed that the lacquer or polymer coating will release and mix with hot gases and burnt powder and become very sticky, causeing lots of problems unless cleaned very often.

the brass cased wolf should not have this coating and therefore should not have the problems related to it.

I never shot the laquered Wolf in a KT, but have in other guns. I noticed the unusual amount of crud I had to mop out of the chamber.

KTWM is right about the polymer burning off. You can see the coating on a new bullet but when you shoot it, the coating is burnt off, just bare metal and about 1/3 of the Wolf rounds I shoot, the cases where it is necked down are split.
