    Cool Used PF9 Checklist

    Hi all,

Just signed up for the forum, as I brought home my first KelTec product ever 2 weeks ago (yep, Nutnfancy got me sold on it without ever even trying it - what can I say, I trust the guy), it's a black on black used PF9 I got for $225. It's definitely pretty dirty and the feed ramp looks like it could use a polish job. Picked it up to replace my Glock 26 for EDC, wasn't carrying religiously, too thick. In the wake of Colorado, we ALL need to be carrying religiously.

Any way, any tips or tricks for a PF9 newbie?

Few things I noticed so far, is it can be finicky putting back together and could DEFINITELY use an extended slide release - if they exist? (Yes, I know it's a "slide stop".) Already planning on ordering the belt clip and mag/grip extension.

Also, since I didn't pay a relative fortune for this and was hoping for an FDE model, but couldn't find one, what are your suggestions as far as painting the frame tan/FDE? Is it a no-go or...?

    Thanks guys/gals!
    -jason

Welcome from the Texas Panhandle. I would clean her up real good, polish the feed ramp and grease the slide. I'm not much on the belt clips and even though I have a few holsters for my PF-9 I almost always go with the Remora.

Thanks guys, noticed last night that my barrel was actually pitted and had some minor surface rust, so put it against the soft wheel and it cleaned up really nice - looks like the previous owner abused it - is there any way I can keep this from getting pitted again, special type of oil?

Also, how do you guys grease it, on my AR I used Rem Oil, Hoppes and/or Mobil 1 (BCG only).

Any type gun grease on the slide mating surfaces, or even wheel bearing grease. You might use fine sand paper to smooth down surfaces first.

The pitting comes from the rust. Keep it rust free it it won't get pitted. Pretty much any oil will work as long as it is applied. Militech-1, Breakfree CLP, Hoppes, and plain old 3-in-1 all work just fine. Apply lightly, let it set a bit, and then wipe it dry.

Keeping in step with the others, Welcome to KTRange and the world of KelTec firearms. It might have been prudent to spend a few extra $$ to get a new PF9 since the warranty is no longer transferable to subsequent owners. Hopefully, you will not need to send it back for service. On the upside, you can do whatever you please to your pistol. I have read posts where folks have been denied warranty service because of barrel polishing. You can make the slide stop a "slide release" and nobody at KelTec can scold you for it.
RE: the pitting on the steel components, the damage is done but you can prevent additional damage to be sure! I'm there are lots of different opinions out there and since you asked, I'll give you mine. I use a product called RustePrufe-nitro solvent & rustproofing oil. I've been using if for a few years and it seems to do what it says. I know that two or three years isn't a long time but I've heard many others sing the song of praise for this product. It's a bit spendy, 5 or 6 bucks for 3 oz, but it goes a long way. The recommended way to apply it is with a 2x2 in piece of chamois that has been saturated with the RustePrufe oil. I put several squares in a baby food jar and poured a small amount of the oil on to the leather. You can use the pieces of chamois repaeatedly. Just put them back into the jar and cap it up. I don't use it to clean the bore initially, so the chamois squares take a long time to get totaly dirty. I've yet to use up my first bottle! I'm sure there are other fine products on the market but I have found this one to live up to it's name.
Good luck with the rehabilitation of your "new to you" PF9. I belive it to be a solid choice for concealed carry. I think we are all interested in seeing how you "dress it up". Please post pics as the rehab progresses. You might want to post a few "before" pics to show just how abused this pistol was. TG

Highly recommend a Handall Jr. grip sleeve.

I use Hoppe's #9 to clean and Breakfree LP to lube on all my Semi Autos. Just my preference as it works good for me.
