OK, it's the Target model that has the dampener.

HARMONIC DAMPENER ADJUSTMENT(Target Model Mini-14 Only)
The harmonic dampener is adjustable to maximize accuracy for a particular bullet
weight or load you are using. You should experiment with different harmonic
dampener positions to determine the optimum position for your choice of
    ammunition.
I have the Ranch model...no dampener.

I knew I had heard something about that in the last 2-3 years. Since you're not looking for sub-moa paper punching, the light weight Ranch Rifle will do you a fine job. Most any varmint within 150 yards, from small fox size and up, should make a doable target for your new rifle. If you plan to varmint hunt with it, I would suggest carrying 10 round mags rather than the 20s. Save them for the zombie attacks.

It's a better price than I got. I paid $710 total---but we also did some trading.

Got my scope the other day, Simmons 3-9. Finally had a chance to shoot it this morning.

Dang! This thing is a blast to shoot!

I put 50 rounds through it getting the scope dialed in and just putting holes in paper, I didn't have any sand bags or a bipod or nothing...just using a table. I shot bulk Federal 55gr FMJ...not much kick at all, more of a little shove. Didn't hurt my shoulder a bit. No jams at all...rifle functions great. Boy did the barrel get hot...lol...and it's a hot day, 92 in the shade.

Oh, I did have one hot shell go down the back of my shirt collar...I think I invented a new dance.

75 yards with no support but my arms and a table. Guess I need to buy some more stuff.

That is on my list! As far as Remington is concerned I love my 1911R1S as it is flawless and looks great to boot.

I tell you what, I can't believe how much fun it is to shoot. I've never owned an autoloading rifle before...maybe that's part of it. Easy to load the mags, lightweight, practically no recoil to speak off. Very easy to strip and clean also. And the .223 has lots of power.

I had it out again yesterday and blew through a box of 100. It makes me grin.

Got a couple of new mags in the mail from Midway. Promags, look just like the Ruger mags. Took it out and tried them last night and they work great. At just over half the price of the Ruger mags. I'll get a couple more next paycheck.

My boss went to the range this past weekend. He said that the Thermold Magazines that he got from the Sportsman's Guide worked perfectly. A three pack of 30 rounders is $25 + shipping.
