I should have picked up a WASR-10 a couple of years ago when they were still about $350, for that reason.

Saiga makes a slightly better quality one, but I'm not sure if the magazines are the same, and it's upwards of the low end AR price range... The appeal of the AK IMO is the price, and a high end one negates that benefit.

They do tend to be a more robust design than AR's though, and ammo is slightly cheaper and better tolerated.

Well, I think the SAIGAs are quite a step up from say a WASR10. At least they are made new by the same people that make the normal AKs. I read that Surefire makes mags for the SAIGA that are also 30 round hi cap mags. Now you could say that cheap standard AK mags are of course cheaper, but how many mags do you really need? I think for most of us 2-3 mags are just fine.

Mags are like ammo, you can't have too many lying around IMO... And its much easier to find standard AK mags than specialized ones, and higher availability means better cost effectiveness.

I'll play, here's my Romanian AK...

Ordered the original Romanian furniture a few months back. Once refinished and installed it really dressed up the rifle nicely. Bought it just as a noisemaker for those days you feel like goin to the range and heat'n up a barrel. It's pretty accurate and ammo is damn cheap when I buy bulk surplus...

I picked up a WASR 10 a while back for $399 and I'm happy with it. Always goes bang, and last time out at the range I hit a 2-liter pop bottle with it first shot a 100 yards. Later it took me about 5 shots to hit a 1 gal. milk jug but that's the way it goes sometime.

I have a 16" Saiga in 5.56, my next AK purchase (far from my next gun purchase) will be a 12ga Saiga. The Saigas come in a sporter configuration and you have to convert them to the typical AK layout but after that you can use any standard AK mag of proper cal.

I picked it because of the superior quality of the Saiga, thie specific one cause I can share the ammo with my AR and one day I'd like to pick up an AR mag adapter for it, they're nice pieces- they can easily be removed to go back to AK mags at any time without tools, just rock it out attached to the AR mag as you would any AK mag, insert AK mag and back to original.

If any of you watch that Sons of Guns, Saiga conversions were Red Jackets original service and still Saigas are the base for a lot of their crazy builds, all their shottys are saigas.
